The body of a veteran rock climber from Boone was found March 4 about 200 feet below the Blue Ridge Parkway at Ice Rock, a popular site for ice climbing about a half mile south of the Bluffs Restaurant at Doughton Park near Laurel Springs. A man was killed while ice climbing on Ice Rock, an area along the Blue Ridge Parkway south of Sparta, authorities said today. Thick layers of ice drape the slopes above and below the road, but climbing is only allowed when that part of the parkway is closed to traffic because of snow and ice, as it has been recently.
